The Estonian government announced this year the launch of a special visa for “digital nomads”. This visa would allow people from around the world whose job / lifestyle is digitally-based to live and work in Estonia. The visa is still in preparation and it’s expected to be launched in early 2019.
A “digital nomad” normally uses technology to make a living and is often free to work remotely from anywhere in the world, as their location is not important for the success of their job. They usually live in foreign countries and work from coffee shops, libraries, co-working offices, etc.
The visa gives digital nomads the possibility to legally reside in Estonia for 365 days, and even get a Schengen visa. The plan includes the eventual launch of “special packages” which would add other features like access to public healthcare. Foreigners could temporarily work for several employers at the same time and change employers without having to reapply for the visa.
Thanks to initiatives like this, Estonia is considered the most “digital” country in Europe and is often referred to as one of the world’s most developed digital societies. They even have an “e-residency” program (people who don’t live in Estonia can become residents) and a very strong “e-government” approach that allows citizens to vote, pay taxes and manage health records online.
If you decide to undertake the full global nomad lifestyle in Estonia, you are definitely going to need something like the GLOBCOIN multi-currency card to manage your finances in the most convenient, cheap and accessible way!
